"On this earth everyone has his cross. But we must act in such a way that we not be the bad, but the good thief."

May 2, 1999 - Holy Father beatifies Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, Capuchin friar who shared intensely in Christ's Passion An estimated 200,000 faithful gathered in St Peter's Square and Via della Conciliazione on Sunday, 2 May, for the solemn Mass at which Pope John Paul II beatified Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, a humble Capuchin priest who said his only desire was "to be a poor friar who prays" (see biography on p. 2). In his homily based on the readings for the Fifth Sunday of Easter, the Holy Father stated that Padre Pio "shared in the Passion with a special intensity: the unique gifts which were given to him, and the interior and mystical sufferings which accompanied them, allowed him constantly to participate in the Lord's agonies, never wavering in his sense that "Calvary is the hill of the saints' ". The Pope prayed that Bl. Padre Pio would look down from heaven and come to the help of all, bringing peace and consolation to every heart. Here is a translation of his homily, which was given in Italian.
CLICK HERE to read the "Vatican Decree On The Heroic Virtues Of Venerable Padre Pio". Thursday, December 18, 1997 marked the day that the Servant of God, Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, was pronounced "Venerable" by His Holiness Pope John Paul II. This step, although not as ceremonious as beatification, is certainly the most important part of the process. This pronouncement is the official closing of the beatification process as all documents have been approved, accepted and signed by the Cardinals and Holy Father. What remains at this time is the acceptance of a miracle through the intercession of Padre Pio since his death on September 23 1968. After the investigation and approval of this miracle the now Venerable Padre Pio can be declared Blessed. The beatification ceremony will be announced in enough time that those spiritual children and devotees wishing to attend the formal pronouncement may make their way to Rome and be at the Basilica of St. Peter for the glorious occasion. O Jesus, full of grace and charity, victim for sinners, so impelled by love for us that You willed to die on the cross, we humbly beseech You to glorify in heaven and on earth, Blessed Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, who generously participated in your sufferings, who loved you so much and labored so faithfully for the glory of Your heavenly Father and for the good of souls. With this confidence we beseech You to grant us, through his intercession, the graces which we ardently desire. Glory be to the Father... Padre Pio was born of simple, hardworking farming people on 25 May, 1897 in Pietrelcina, southern Italy. He was tutored privately until his entry to the novitiate of the Capuchin Friars at the age of 15. Of feeble health but strong will, with the help of grace he completed the required studies and was ordained a priest in 1910.
On 20 Sept., 1918 the five wounds of Our Lord's Passion appeared on his body, making him the first stigmatized priest in the history of the Church. Countless numbers were attracted to his confessional and many more received his saintly counsel and spiritual guidance through correspondence. His whole life was marked by long hours of prayer and continual austerity. His letters to his spiritual directors reveal the ineffable sufferings, physical and spiritual, which accompanied him all through life. They also reveal his very deep union with God, his burning love for the Blessed Eucharist and Our Blessed Lady. Worn our by over half a century of intense suffering and constant apostolic activity in San Giovanni Rotondo, he was called to his heavenly reward on 23 Sept., 1968. After a public funeral which attracted almost 100,000, his body was entombed in the crypt of Our Lady of Grace Church. Increasing numbers flock to his tomb from all parts of the world and many testify to spiritual and temporal graces received. On 16 Feb., 1973 the Archbishop of Manfredonia, Mgr. Valentino Vailati, consigned the documentation to the Sacred Congregation for the Causes of Saints so as to obtain the "nihil obstat" for the beginning of the process of his Beatification. Padre Pio and the Stigmata Padre Pio bore the wounds of Jesus on his hands, feet, and side for 50 years. Several days before he died in 1968, all evidence of the wounds disappeared. On October 22, 1918, Padre Pio wrote to his spiritual advisor, Padre Benedetto, describing how he received the stigmata.
"On the morning of the 20th of last month, in the choir, after I had celebrated Mass, I yielded to a drowsiness similar to a sweet sleep. All the internal and external senses and even the very faculties of my soul were immersed in indescribable stillness. Absolute silence surrounded and invaded me. I was suddenly filled with great peace and abandonment which effaced everything else and caused a lull in the turmoil. All this happened in a flash." "While this was taking place, I saw before me a mysterious person similar to the one I had seen on the evening of 5 August. The only difference was that his hands and feet and side were dripping blood. The sight terrified me and what I felt at that moment is indescribable. I thought I should die and really should have died if the Lord had not intervened and strengthened my heart which was about to burst out of my chest."
"The vision disappeared and I became aware that my hands, feet and side were dripping blood. Imagine the agony I experienced and continue to experience almost every day. The heart wound bleeds continually, especially from Thursday evening until Saturday. Dear Father, I am dying of pain because of the wounds and the resulting embarrassment I feel in my soul. I am afraid I shall bleed to death if the Lord does not hear my heartfelt supplication to relieve me of this condition. Will Jesus, who is so good, grant me this grace? Will he at least free me from the embarrassment caused by these outward signs? I will raise my voice and will not stop imploring him until in his mercy he takes away, not the wound or the pain, which is impossible since I wish to be inebriated with pain, but these outward signs which cause me such embarrassment and unbearable humiliation" (Letters 1, No. 511). |
